AIPCS believes strongly that the focus of the summer program at Johns Hopkins
University's Center for Talented Youth (CTY) meshes perfectly with AIPCS's own
philosophy: rigorous academics.

Since 2002, AIPCS has encouraged its most ambitious, hard-working students to
participate in the CTY program.

In order to gain admission to the program, students must take the SAT beginning in the
7th grade and score high enough to meet CTY's challenging standards.

In 2008, 44 students from AIPCS (23%) qualified for the program, more students than
from other Oakland schools combined. This percentage represents the highest
participation rate of any school in the United States.

AIPCS participants had a memorable experience at the CTY program. This is
what they had to say:

"...I have learned a lot of important skills, theories, and concepts that I will be able to
use in the future...if I had another chance, I would definitely come back!" -Rebecca S.,
8th Grade Student

"My time at CTY was one of the best times of my life...It also gave me a taste of the
college life....At my logic class at CTY, I learned how to argue so that if I need to argue
with someone, I can win." -Perry C., 8th Grade Student

"Those three weeks were a way to open my eyes and see how life away from home is.
To my parents' surprise, I changed into a less dependent child whom my parents did not
even recognize." -Michael C., 8th Grade Student

"Living on my own gave me an inner-confidence that I never had before...I feel like a
new, different person." -Nora L., 8th Grade Student

"...not only did I learn school-related ideas, I also learned how to be responsible and do
everything for myself for three weeks." -Jin H., 8th Grade Student
